About

The Intersection of Logic and Human Connection

Claudia Smalley is a contemporary artist whose work operates at the dialogue between technical structure and human emotion. With a background in Industrial Design and Predictive Analytics, Claudia approaches the canvas with an analytical eye, seeking out the underlying rhythms and hidden geometries of her subjects. Whether she is exploring the biological intricacy of a neural synapse or the familiar architecture of everyday objects, her process is one of translating complex patterns into a visual language of connection.

Her work serves as an interpretation of relationships—a commentary on the human race’s dependence on connection and the strengthening of "community." This theme is the heartbeat of her most recognized collections: the "Synapse" series, which utilizes patterns of gaps and forms inspired by biological imagery, and the "Utensil" series, which elevates the rhythmic utility of stainless steel measuring spoons and cups into fine art.

Heritage and Academic Recognition

A first-generation Polish-American artist, Smalley was born to parents who immigrated to Chicago. This heritage instills a deep respect for craftsmanship and the enduring nature of handmade objects in her practice. Throughout her artist career throughout the Chicago area, and now operating from her studio in Lake Forest, Illinois, Claudia continues to be a voice in the Chicago arts community and beyond.

Her work has been exhibited at prestigious venues, including the Polish Museum of America and the Illinois State Museum through the Illinois Artisans Program. In a testament to her technical and conceptual depth, Smalley was selected as an ArtFutura Finalist by James Rondeau, the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Media and Global Presence

Smalley’s diverse career has bridged the gap between the fine art studio and the national screen. She is an award-winning artist and served as contestant on the premier season of TLC’s Craft Wars. Her original artwork has also been featured on the sets of the STARZ series The Girlfriend Experience.

Her practice has garnered international attention, with features in local and global publications such as the Chicago Reader, Business News Daily, CBS Chicago, and La Repubblica (Italy’s national newspaper).

Studio Philosophy

In the studio, Claudia is committed to archival excellence, utilizing professional-grade materials and a refined methodology where data meets the brush. Beyond her original canvases, she serves as a resource for the artistic community, sharing her curated "Studio Essentials" and technical insights with fellow creators.

Through her portraits and abstracts, Claudia Smalley continues to explore the "lo-fi" frequency of life—finding the quiet, steady patterns that connect us all.
